For Americans, Saturday night is filled with the laughs caused by SNL. For us, those laughs came on Monday nights, thanks to Radio Rochela. (Roughly translated as “Radio Hijinks”.) For over 50 years, notwithstanding the quality of the scripts (which were really wearing thin the last four years), Venezuelans sat in front of the TV, tuned channel 2 (RCTV), and howled in laughter at how a very talented cast made fun of politicians, soap operas and Venezuelans themselves. Radio Rochela, beyond the sometimes crass jokes and cheap humor —sometimes exploiting skimpily-dressed women—, is and always will be a reflection of our capacity to laugh at ourselves… a capacity that served us well in 2007.
